Keto Mbiri’s City Guide to Marrakech, Morocco
“Medina Magic, Mint Tea & North African Soul”
Yooo fam!
It’s your guy Keto Mbiri, vibing out in the heart of Morocco — Marrakech! This city doesn’t whisper… it shouts, in the best way. It’s a full-on sensory carnival — snake charmers, sizzling tagines, incense in the air, and architecture so intricate it’ll have your jaw on the floor.
Whether you’re chasing souks, sunsets or stories, Marrakech gives you everything — and then some.
🕰️ A Little History – Kingdoms, Kasbahs & Culture
Marrakech is over 1,000 years old, founded by the Almoravid dynasty back in 1062. It served as a capital for empires, a center for Islamic learning, and the heartbeat of Berber trade routes.
This place was nicknamed the “Red City” for its terracotta-colored walls — and when you’re walking through the medina, it really does feel like you’re strolling through living history.

✈️ Getting There – Welcome to the Kingdom
I landed at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) — smooth process, with flights from Paris, Cairo, Dubai, Nairobi, Lagos, and all across Europe and North Africa.
Transport-wise:
- Grab a petit taxi for local rides (make sure they use the meter — very important!)
- Walk the medina (it’s chaotic but magical)
- Or ride a calèche (horse-drawn carriage) just for the vibes.
🛏️ Where to Stay – Riads, Rooftops & Romance
If you’re coming to Marrakech and NOT staying in a riad, you’re doing it wrong. Period.
- Riad Yasmine – Instagram heaven. Green tiles, courtyard pool, and classic Moroccan charm.
- Riad BE Marrakech – Cozy, colorful, and welcoming AF.
- La Mamounia – Old-school glam with a price tag, but trust me… she’s worth it.
- On a budget? There are LOADS of boutique riads starting around $30/night — and they’re still full of magic.

🗺️ Things to Do – Marrakech Like a Local (But Better)
Let me tell you — every alley in this city tells a story. Here’s how I got lost (and found) in the best way:
- Jemaa el-Fnaa Square – Drums, dancers, monkeys, street food, chaos. Pure electricity at night.
- Bahia Palace – Ornate ceilings, tiled courtyards, and centuries of opulence.
- Majorelle Garden & YSL Museum – Tranquil, blue-drenched, designer vibes.
- Hammam spa experience – Scrubbed, steamed, and pampered into a whole new human.
- Day trip to the Atlas Mountains – Snowy peaks, Berber villages, and mint tea with a view.
- Sahara Desert Excursion – Camel rides, starlit tents, desert drums. Life-changing.

🍲 Food & Drink – North African Goodness in Every Bite
Fam, the flavors in Marrakech are next-level. Here’s what I devoured:
- Tagine – Slow-cooked meat or veg in earthenware. The lamb + apricot combo? Chef’s kiss.
- Couscous Friday – A weekly tradition across Morocco — ask your host to hook you up.
- Harira soup – Especially during Ramadan. Nourishing and spicy.
- Street brochettes – Skewers of meat grilled right on the spot. Add that khobz (Moroccan bread).
- Fresh-squeezed orange juice in Jemaa el-Fnaa. 5 dirhams = joy.
And you KNOW I sipped mint tea (“atay”) at every turn — hot, sweet, and poured from a height like a performance. “Bssaha!” (Cheers in Darija.)
👥 The People – Friendly, Fierce & Full of Spirit
Moroccans are proud, poetic, and super welcoming — especially when you show respect for their culture. Expect to hear:
- “Salam Alaikum” – Peace be upon you
- “Labas?” – How are you?
- “Shukran bzaf!” – Thanks a lot
- “Wakha” – OK / Cool
I kicked it with young artists in Gueliz, shared tagine with Berber elders in the mountains, and got lost in conversation with vendors who insisted I try their spices for free. The hospitality here is real.
🔐 Safety – Street Smart & Culturally Cool
Marrakech is safe for tourists, but do stay sharp in the medina.
Tips:
- Don’t follow “helpful” strangers offering directions (they might ask for cash after).
- Watch for pickpockets in crowded areas.
- Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered shows respect.
- Learn a few Darija phrases — it goes a long way!
Otherwise? Relax and vibe. It’s mostly peace, prayer calls, and good energy.
🌍 Keto’s Final Word: Marrakech Is a Living Poem
This city awakens your senses, grounds your spirit, and fills your memory card real quick. You’ll hear drums at sunset, taste cinnamon and cumin in the air, and leave with a head full of colors, stories, and soul.
It’s not just a destination — it’s an experience.
